How can a traumatic brain injury impact a person’s life?

May 12th, 2019

Traumatic brain injuries (TBI) cause a wide range of effects. A person’s physical ability may be limited, while emotional and psychological effects are also quite common. Because TBI can be difficult to manage, for both the patient as well as family and friends, the Mayo Clinic offers the following information.

TBI has numerous causes. Car accidents are a common factor in serious head injuries, especially when vehicle occupants aren’t wearing their seatbelts. Fall can also cause a great deal of damage, which is an issue for seniors with mobility limitations. Service members and people who play contact sports also face a greater risk of TBI. No matter the underlying cause, the effects of TBI can be quite severe.

For example, depending on which area of the brain is affected, a person may experience significant communication problems. Some people are unable to organize their thoughts in a reasonable manner, which makes carrying on a conversation confusing. In turn, this can lead to problems socializing. A person might be unable to read nonverbal cues, which can make it difficult to interact with others in a normal manner. Problems with emphasis or tone of voice are also quite common in this case. When a person faces difficulties socializing, he or she will feel isolated from others and find it hard to make a connection.

In this case, emotions can also be affected by a significant head injury. Some people develop depression and anxiety, as well as anger issues or irritability. Mood swings are also quite common, which can make it hard to keep a handle on emotions. These issues are best treated by a therapist to ensure the person is able to lead a happy and healthy life. Medication may also be necessary to keep changing emotions in check.
